Home Renovation and Bullet Journals

It's been a long journey and we've had many up and downs. I wanted to talk to you about our landing transformation and everything we did to make this change as it was one of the first 'areas' to be completed!

The house in general was very outdated, offkey colours, old fashioned light fittings and in all of the bedrooms, none of the lights were in the middle of the room!

Let's just get to the point! Here is everything we did to transform this space! I have also linked where I bought everything.

- Removed the door on the left (water tank room) and plaster boarded it, we then asked a Plasterer to work his magic before we mis coated and painted it.

- Sanded all the walls and used Dulux White Emulsion in Brilliant White Matt for the walls, ceilings and coving. It needed 3 coats

- Repainted the walls using Dulux White Mist Matt - 2 coats

- Sanded all the woodwork (Doors, frames and skirting board) and primed using Johnstones Wood Primer (Bought from B&M) and then Dulux Satinwood Eggshell White

- Sanded the Bannisters and primed using Zinnser BIN Primer and then Dulux Satinwood Eggshell

- Removed all door fittings (Door handles and hinges) sanded, cleaned and sprayed Matt Black using Screwfix No Nonsense Spray

- Replaced underlay and carpet. Our carpet is called Oyster Cove in Grey from Carpetright.

Looking at the above now, it doesn't seem like alot, there was definitely alot of stuff inbetween like removing the extra bannister handle from the wall, my father in law was adament we keep it in the garage as we will need to put it back on the wall when we're old ha!

Here is the finished look - except light fittings and skirting boards.

I am so happy with how bright it looks now!

To do list:

- Put skirting board back on

- Touch up paint as carpet fitter chipped alot of this off!

- Replace light fittings

- Replace Light Switches

- Put door back on cupboard

- Decorate!

We completed this transformation during Lockdown 2020 and I have to admit at times I really did suffer mentally as I felt it was just constant work work work but I know the more work I put in, the quicker it will be finished. I know alot of you renovations out there feel the same as I do, when you're walking around in your 'DIY clothes', everything is so dusty and it just feels like this is how you'll be living forever, well I promise that it won't! Keep going, a little each day takes you a little closer to the finish line.

Insomnia, anxiety, stress.. are some of the things I suffer from at times. I had tried almost everything! Sleeping pills, herbal tea, pillow spray, lavender oil, meditation, exercise... nothing seemed to work longer than a couple of nights.

I was over the moon when Kalm Koala sent me one of their blankets to try out! Let's talk about what Weighted Blankets are.

What is a Weighted Blanket?

The weighted blanket uses the principles of Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) or Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) to improve relaxation. These blankets come in different sizes and weights, and can be used by children and adults.

At first, the concept of a blanket was used to support children and adults suffering from anxiety and other mental health struggles. Now, many people are picking up on the soothing benefits of a weighted blanket and the concept has gone mainstream.

What can a weighted blanket be used for?

Combats stress

Alleviates Restless Leg Syndrome

Helps ADHD Patients With Focus

Improves Sleep

Recreates a hug

Helps with anxiety

Before i was using a weighted blanket, i would lay in bed until 3 or 4am just staring at the ceiling because i just couldn't fall asleep and would wake up around 10am. My sleep pattern was all over the place and as I didn't get enough sleep, some days i would feel so moody.

The weighted blanket I got was 6.8kg and in size 60*80 to fit the king size bed (the lightest from their range) I know some of you may think 'how can you sleep with such a weight?" The weight of the blanket is evenly distributed and it doesn't feel like a weight, it feels secure and it feels like a giant hug which is comforting.

As you can see in my photos, the actual weighted blanket is quite thin, it has two sides, a cool and warm side so it is perfect to use in both winter and summer. It is also beautifully designed and the grey would suit any home decor style! The cover can come off easily to machine wash simply by untying the strings (the strings holds the weighted blanket in place)

The weight of the blanket is made from non toxic glass beads which mean you won’t feel them. Micro glass beads are considered one of the higher end weighted blanket fillers and are environmentally friendly too! Since fewer glass beads are required to make a weighted blanket, it means it’s thinner and less bulky!

A good weighted blanket will have several square pockets filled with weights and stitched together. The pocketed design helps to evenly distribute the weight all over the body and prevents the fillers from going to one side! (See below)

Here are some frequently asked questions from when I posted about this blanket on my instagram stories

Is the blanket hot?

No, the blanket did not cause me to be more hot than i already had been, I always kept the 'cool' side on me because I liked the silky feeling.

Is the blanket heavy?

It's not so heavy that you would not be able to move freely but it is heavier than your normal duvet.

How do I know if the blanket is for me?

Do your research, I read alot of blogs and reviews and many of them said that they used weighted blankets to help their insomnia. Click this link here to see what other benefits a weighted blanket has.

Was it expensive?

Weighted Blankets average between £80 - £150 - I guess it is more expensive than a duvet but if you feel it will improve your quality of life, it is a small investment.

How do you choose what weight?

I used the guideline on Kalm Koala's website here.

Did it work?

It definitely did work for me and it’s helped me fall asleep quicker and also relaxes me! Everyone is different though and I didn’t rely solely on the blanket to give me insomnia relief. I stuck to a bed time routine which helped too. I‘m quite used to the weight now and when I use a “normal” duvet, I can definitely see a difference!

Thank you Kalm Koala for giving me the gift of sleep. I am so grateful to have been able to use your amazing product and write this blog to share my experience with others.

These blankets are currently on sale and you can use code NEW20 for an additional £20 off your order!

I was lucky enough to have been gifted this item and the views expressed in this blog are my own.

We have 18 internal doors which means, 36 door handles, can you imagine how much this would be to replace ALL the door handles? Let's not forget hinges too!

When I was doing research, the average cost of door handles was around £8-£12 and those were considered 'cheap' ... my budget doesn't stretch that far!

PLAN B: Mini upscale project!

Firstly, unscrew all your door handles and anything else on them that you want to to spray. Soak them in some warm water and scrape off any paint. Make sure they are very dry, I would recommend letting it 'air dry' too.

There are so many spray paints you can buy, the most popular one is the Rust-Oleum brand which I have also used (Will share with you the difference at the end) However, during the pandemic, I could only find this brand on eBay and it's 2 for £25 when usually it's £7.99!!

Anyway, I am using No Nonsense Matt Black Spray and for the same size, it's only £4.99! You can buy this from ScrewFix, at the moment it's click and collect only.

Once your handles are dry, put on some gloves and a mask and spray it lightly and evenly.

I would recommend spraying the handles at least 3 times as you use handles often and daily. This would save you from having to repeat the process sooner.

It's always better to spray thinly and more layers than once but thick as this will cause dripping and won't be as durable.

I did mine indoors in a well ventilated room as I did start outdoors but the wind blew my cloth over and all my handles got ruined! #RenoFail

I am so pleased with how they turned out!

Here is the Rust Oleum and the No Nonsense Brand side by side. (My handles are bumpy)

Rust- Oleum:

Is more of a 'shine' matt

Sprays evenly

Drips from the spray nozzle

6 hours to touch dry

No Nonsense

Excellent Price

Is definitely Matt finish

Sprays evenly

No drip

Touch dry within 2 hours

I hope you enjoyed this! Please tag me on Instagram of your upscales and I will re-share your fantastic renovation projects! See below my before and after :)

Thank you for reading!
